Innovative tools and programs are now available to online businesses to gauge the mindset of their customers. These tools pinpoint their perceptions and thus help astute business heads respond with relevant public relations and Internet marketing strategies.

The Financial Times has just recently introduced an experimental program Newssift, which tracks sentiments about certain business topics currently in the news, along with a specialized search engine.

This lets users organize their queries on basis of topic, place, person, organization and theme. For example, employing Newssift, a search for Wal-Mart suggests that sentiment about the firm has recently turned positive. However, when the search is refined with another suggested term ‘Labor Force & Unions’, the ratio gets unfavorable.

The simplest algorithms function by scanning relevant keywords to categorize a specific statement as negative or positive, on basis of a simple binary analysis. Simpler incarnations of such sentiment analysis are also becoming available for casual Web visitors in the form of more ‘lightweight’ tools such as Twendz, Twitrratr and Tweetfeel. These let users gauge the mood of Twitter users about a range of topics.

However this approach does not succeed in capturing the subtleties, which bring complex human language to life: sarcasm, slang, irony and many other idiomatic expressions. The more advanced algorithms by Jodange, Newssift and Scout Labs use refined analytics to achieve an accuracy of bout 70 to 80 percent. Importantly, users can reclassify inaccurate results on their own for the system to rectify its mistakes.

Sentiment analysis algorithms will gradually get more sophisticated to produce more accurate results. The trend may ultimately lead to thoroughly sophisticated filtering mechanisms, which could well become an integral part of everyday Web usage, an aspect that needs to be kept in mind by businesses in Winnipeg and Portland, while devising their Internet marketing strategies.

Think Design – WebWomen!

Posted by Nina Patel On September - 24 - 2009

Welcome to WebWomen – a time for Webidiotz to focus on the wonderful women who are on the web! Last week I discussed Stephanie Staples, founder of Your Life, Unlimited. This week, I discuss Think Design and Two Wonderful Women on the Web!

Our greatest asset is our ability to filter, to envision,
to think- creatively, with wit.

We produce effective spaces that are responsive,
mellifluous*, and expressive of our Clients.
We are clever designers and passionate thinkers.

Allow think design the opportunity
to bring your thoughts to reality!

*def’n: 1•having a smooth rich flow (a mellifluous voice)
2•filled with something (as honey) that sweetens>

Isn’t that the most intelligent statement you’ve read in a long time? Well, that’s Think Design.

Think Design, brainchild of Paulette Kryrluk & Tammie Rocke collectively, has mellifluously taken Winnipeg by storm. They are responsible for exciting additions to Winnipeg’s scene with Pizzeria Gusto on Academy (who’s website we are currently constructing), Fazzo on Corydon and HiFi in Osborne Village. Cutting-edge, contemporary designs that use space in innovative, out-of-the-ordinary ways is the name of the game.

Before starting Think Design, Paulette and Tammie had rubbed shoulders while working for another design company. Being free thinkers and entrepreneurs at heart – they yearned for the excitement of working for themselves and after a glass of wine (or maybe a few) decided that they wanted to go for it – start up their own company. They had the skills, the talent, the confidence and savvy to make their entrepreneurial dreams into reality……Think Design.

A few years later…. Webidiotz arrived on the scene. These WebWomen were in need of a website. Initially, both Paulette and Tammie were uncertain of the benefits that a website could bring to their business. Thinking that their main method of attaining business was word of mouth and referrals – they weren’t convinced that a website would advance their sales. For the ladies at Think Design – the website needed to reflect their keen sense of style and showcase their design abilities within the website design, layout and function of the site. So Webidiotz has done both – created a site that reflects the soul and style of Think Design, in addition to optimizing a productive, purposeful website for these WebWomen.

Webidiotz delivered yet another happy, harmonious and most importantly mellifluous website to the world wide web. Bringing Think Design into the 21st century and business is booming at Think Design and no matter how many “words of mouth” opened their traps – the website has undeniably provided a customer base that continuously flows.

Neil Patel – The Littlest Hobo In Winnipeg…….woof

Posted by Neil Patel On September - 24 - 2009

Sometimes I feel like the “Littlest Hobo”. You know, the show where the dog roams around the country helping people, making friends, and then going on his way.

I have now travelled to over 600 businesses across Southern Manitoba – and some online meetings with clients as far as Flintabbatey Flonatin’s home town. But my message is a little different than the lovable german shepherd’s … I’m talking about Internet Marketing. This conversation always leads to the inevitable question – how relevant is Internet Marketing to my business?

The old way of thinking says the Internet is just used for window shopping…that when consumers are ready to buy, they go offline. This just isn’t true anymore. The Internet is no longer just an information exchange platform. It’s a booming sales platform.

Over $100 billion worth of sales took place online last year. That is an outrageous amount of money and the figures are quickly rising every year! – $200 billion will be here very soon.

FACTS:

  • Half the world’s population now has access to the Web.
  • Your customers are spending 25% of their annual income with shopping decisions made through online research.
  • Online sales now exceed 100 billion dollars annually and will exceed 200 billion very soon.
  • 348,000 Manitoban’s spend 30% online is with social media activity like FaceBook and Twitter.
  • Nearly 90% of them find websites through Search Engines like Google and Yahoo.
  • Search Engines drive more than half of online purchases and buying decisions.

The Internet is not a get rich scheme – there is no overnight success but what I can tell you without hesitation is that your business will suffer in the coming years if you do not take action.

So, if you see me walking down the dirt road (in the Littlest Hobo style) -I’m coming to help your business grow and prepare for the adventures of tomorrow’s business world.

woof. woof.

Online video advertising, a big growth area, beckons marketers

Posted by Neil Patel On September - 23 - 2009

According to a comScore Mobile report, some types of firms are better at capitalizing on the huge potential of online video advertising than their counterparts.

comScore Mobile’s Evan Neufeld noted in the report, entitled ‘Wired: Connecting to the Mobile Marketing Revolution’, “There’s also been more promotion over the past year of ‘traditional’ industries such as apparel, personal products, packaged foods and food retail.”

According to eMarketer projections, in the US there will be roughly 144 million online video viewers this year. eMarketer senior analyst Paul Verna explains: “The online video experience now is light-years away from its earlier humble origins. The Web has indeed exploded with video content—a majority of it available free of charge to the user in browser-friendly interfaces-propelled by YouTube, premium sites, Web portals, and other sharing destinations.”

Paul Verna adds, “Best of all, the bulk of the current video inventory today is sharable through blogs, microblogs, social networks, e-mail and other social platforms.” The ease of distributing and sharing makes every video on offer a potential viral hit. Online video thus opens a host of opportunities for savvy content distributors and marketers.

Businesses in Winnipeg and Portland, looking to scale up their online operations, need to be aware of the developments in areas like website design, ecommerce and search engine optimization.

Accordingly, specific SEO Portland or SEO Winnipeg strategies can be devised.

Certain industries are enjoying greater success at monetizing their mobile advertisements, Evan Neufeld of comScore Mobile points out: “Just one-fifth of all mobile inventory currently, is house ads. The supply-demand dynamic is quite reminiscent of the early Internet.”

That well could portend big things for the future of mobile ads.
The base of online video viewers would grow to nearly 188 million viewers in 2013 in the US alone, according to a study by eMarketer projections. In fact, it seems like there’s video everywhere you check online.

This is largely because watching video online no more an exercise in frustration… Importantly, the content quality is rising, too. Earlier, the space was largely dominated by short user-generated content (UGC) aimed at a collegiate crowd, while video offerings now cater to premium age groups and specific interests, from retirees who relish classic movies to teenage sports lovers.

Knowledge Networks found that the percentages of US Internet subscribers who watched full-length TV shows grew from 2006 to 2008 by large margins across all age categories.

Most video inventory gets funded through ad support including user-generated content, humor videos, news clips, television shows and special events like the Olympics. On the other side of the spectrum, mainstream sports content and feature films continue to be monetized largely through subscriptions as well as download fees.

As the medium matures, lucrative monetization models will acquire clearer focus, adding to the popularity of online video advertising. These developments need to be seen in proper perspective while chalking out plans for Internet marketing in Winnipeg and Portland.
